      When I was doing my Alevels part of my AVCE in health and social care meant that I could go on work experience with a district nursing team which I really enjoyed. From this I worked in a care home and then managed to apply for university where I may ompleted a foundation degree in nursing, which meant that I did a little bit of each type of nursing (midwifery, mental health, adult acute, and children’s nursing) I then went on to specialise in mental health nursing, from this I have worked in a few different places, including adolescence and child mental health services and then adult acute wards, a more senior position was available and I applied and got it! It has taken a lot of hard work to get where I am but I can’t imagine doing anything else.

      Hi, it’s Julie here. I tried lots of different jobs when I left school and then when I started working in a elderly residential home I loved it so went on to do my nurse training. I needed to go and do an extra gcse beforehand as I didn’t have enough qualifications but I got there in the end!

      I didn’t start working in mental health until I was 30! I’ve worked in retail and an office, volunteered, been unemployed and run my own business in the arts for a while as well. I use my experiences from the past to help me understand other people’s experiences.

      Richard: Always keep looking out for new opportunities, trainings, potential learning, try different jobs in the care sector, talk to people, visit, speak to the training colleges and or the professional organisations, get the knowledge that you need in order to make your decision and lastly you can’t beat working hard at something …

      I started off with doing sciences at GCSE and then biology, chemistry and maths at A Levels. I went on to Manchester medical school for 5 years. Nowadays you then do a 2 year foundation years followed by 6 years of training. You meet amazing people and make life long friends along the way.
