Steven here, I suppose it would have to be working out how to get to different people in different post codes using public transport.

There’s a couple of things I don’t like – some of the paperwork is a bit repetitive and doesn’t have an obvious use. Sometimes people refuse to take responsibility for what needs to be done. There are political factors too – don’t ever imagine that providing healthcare isn’t deeply affected by politics and people who want to make money from it.

Richard: The paperwork and hours spent in front of a computer screen. Like others the politics of healthcare can be unsettling, notably how mental health still does not have parity with the amount of money spent on physical health.

Hi Isabelle and Alice, there is not much I dislike about my job. What can be more interesting than studying the mind and how it works? Having said that of course it requires hard work, dedication and perseverance. I dislike anything that takes me away from patient care, so things like paperwork, although it is necessary. Also I have to do on call work which means covering the hospital during the night, so I can get called at anytime. It’s not fun being woken up but you do get to see and speak to some amazing people in their hour of need so that makes up for it.

I genuinely love being a mental health doctor! Most of the job is interesting, challenging and rewarding. The hardest thing I find is that healthcare is at the mercy of the government and particularly mental health, so we often see services change or be restricted in order to cut costs. There is also an increased demand but not an increase in staff, so sometimes you can very stretched and have to prioritise.
Having said that – teams work really well together and patients are always our first so it’s worth it!!
